I’m not sure if this was supposed to be cute or something, but the original nickname origin was much better.īut there were some changes that were really good.

Instead, the movie tells us that Tobin (one of The Duke’s love interests) gave her this nickname because he considered her “one of the boys” which made her better than any other girl in his opinion. But in the movie, this backstory is inexplicable changed. It’s explained in the book that there was a convenience store called The Duke and Duchess where the employees had to refer to you as a Duke or Duchess, but The Duke, being a tomboy, got called “Duke” by an employee when she was in middle school and the name stuck. In the story of the book, A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle by John Green, the love interest is a girl called The Duke. Meanwhile Stuart isn’t regular guy who helps her, he’s a pop star.Įven really little things, that didn’t need to be changed were and it didn’t make sense. In the movie she’s been renamed to Julie, and there’s no Flobie Five, or criminal parents, or bad boyfriend- no Julie lives in the town where the train gets stuck and she can’t decide between going to college and taking care of her sick mom.

The original stories are mere ghosts in the movie, haunting the viewing experience and leaving me asking why did they change this particular detail or that cute scene. But it was frustrating to watch it the first time, because it’s nothing like the book.

I want to be clear that I liked the movie, it was fun, it was cute, ten out of ten will watch next Christmas and the Christmas after that. Let It Snow, the movie, and Let It Snow, the book, are two totally different things. Both are good, but the only things they have in common are the most of the character names and the fact there’s a train and a snowstorm and a waffle restaurant. I was counting down the days to the Netflix release. It’s three separate stories, but they intertwine them very very well. I found it a really quick read because of the format. In my excitement for the Netflix adaptation of this novel, and because it had been like ten years since my first read, I reread Let It Snow one evening. It’s a sweet story, where Stuart and Jubilee become friends and Jubilee realizes her boyfriend isn’t the best guy and I JUST REALLY LIKE THIS STORY. Later in the story, she meets Stuart, a super nice guy who invites her home to spend Christmas with him, his mom, and little sister.

So while all Jubilee wants to do is see her boyfriend, she ends up stuck on a train in small town, far from home, in the middle of a snow storm. But at said showroom, Jubilee’s parents are involved in a fight over Flobie Village pieces, leaving them and others involved dubbed “The Flobie Five”.

Jubilee’s parent are avid collectors of the Flobie Santa Village, cute holiday village collectibles that can only be bought on Christmas Eve in the Flobie showroom. Why you may ask? The answer is potentially one of my favorite plot points. The Jubilee Express by Maureen Johnson follows Jubilee who’s being sent by train to her grandparents in Florida on Christmas Eve. My favorite story in the overarching plot is the first. Some parts of it are dated, from the mentions of hotmail email addresses and penguin iHomes, to The Duke’s “I’m not like other girls” complex that manifests in the internalized misogynist I hope we left behind in 2008, but regardless, it’s a quick read and a fun time.

Let It Snow, the novel in three parts by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle, is delightfully cute and full of Christmas cheer.
