In Dodge City an inexperienced young cavalry officer, Lt. Later, Mannon finds the judge fishing on a river and murders him too. After Flagg leaves, Mannon arrives and shoots the warden, knowing Flagg will be blamed for the murder. Flagg has no choice but to leave the disabled warden as he will be shortly found by the pursuing prison guards. Unfortunately the warden tries to break free from Flagg, who was about to let him go free, and is wounded in the process. After Mannon is released, Flagg takes the prison warden hostage, to escape and track down Mannon. Overhearing his plans, fellow convict Jake Flagg takes it upon himself to warn Marshal Dillon, an old friend. He vows revenge on the men who sent him there: the judge and the marshal, Matt Dillon. Meanwhile, in the territorial prison, after doing twelve years, notorious gunslinger Will Mannon is lashed one last time before release. After three weeks of recovery, Dillon awakens to Miss Kitty, former saloon owner who has returned to Dodge from New Orleans on news that her old flame Dillon was dying. Everybody recognizes the beloved former lawman and he is nursed back to health. Dillon is stabbed in the back and drifts down the river in the canoe until he is found by a wagon and taken to Dodge City, Kansas. Marshal Matt Dillon, now a fur trapper, is attacked on a riverbank by a group of men trying to steal his rifle and furs.

Subsequent TV movies are Gunsmoke: The Last Apache (1990), Gunsmoke: To the Last Man (1992), Gunsmoke: The Long Ride (1993), and Gunsmoke: One Man's Justice (1994), none of which are set in Dodge, nor do they share any cast members from the TV series other than Arness. A surprising episode that was entertaining to watch.Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge is a 1987 American Western television film based on the 20-year (1955–1975) series Gunsmoke starring James Arness. The story never got dull since we went from one interesting scene to another making for a great watch.

With any luck the Marshal might be able to get the bandits plus change the thinking of a young teenage kid. Marshal Dillon has a plan that involves Billy and a way to get the gang out of Dodge.
They send warnings to Matt by means of beating up Doc Adams, then killing a friend of Thad next beating up the newspaper man and his pregnant wife all in the name of letting Billy out of jail. While the Marshal is holding Billy, the rest of the gang members start causing problems around Dodge. When the gang members go back into town to spring Billy something goes wrong and one of the members is killed. Billy is a young buck with a mouth larger that the Mississippi river and his brother Ed is bound and determined to break his younger brother out of jail. Billy is the younger brother of another gang member named Ed. The wounded gang member turns out to be a teenager named Billy. However the Marshal is able to wound on of the bandits in the leg and is arrested. During the robbery one of the gang members shoots a citizens right before they make their way out of town. This episode opens up with five bandits robbing the Dodge Bank.
